We require a referral from your GP or another specialist to book an initial appointment.
Referrals from a GP are valid for 12 months from the date of your first visit with Dr Malecky, and referrals from a Specialist (e.g. a specialist paediatrician) are valid for only 3 months. After this you will need another referral. While we do endeavour to keep patients up to date regarding the currency of your referral, ultimately you are responsible for ensuring you have a current referral at the time of your appointment.
A referral enables you to claim a rebate through Medicare (with a Medicare card) for your visit with Dr Malecky.
Yes. For existing patients with long-term and ongoing need for review (including ongoing review of retractile testes), we do accept indefinite referrals. Indefinite referrals do not expire.
Please ensure the words INDEFINITE REFERRAL are noted on your referral from your GP and we will add this to your child's file. As we are a busy practice you can also let us know when providing the referral that it's indefinite, as this helps to ensure it is recorded correctly in our system.
This timing is set by the hospital.
Generally we work with the hospital to allow patients to be seen in order of youngest to eldest to minimise fasting discomfort for, e.g., newborn children. Changes to this may be made for patients with severe allergies (usually seen first) or other medical indications as appropriate.
The surgical bookings team at Calvary John James Hospital will usually get in touch the day before the surgery, after 2:00pm, to advise when you are expected at the hospital and where to present when you arrive. You are also able to call the hospital the day before the procedure to confirm this information.
If necessary you can contact Calvary John James Hospital on (02) 6281 8100.
We accept and try to accommodate urgent referrals from your GP or Specialist.
Dr Malecky will initially assess your child in the rooms and will recommend surgery if appropriate. Expect to wait 3-6 weeks for this initial appointment depending on cancellations and the time of year. Surgery will not be performed on the day of the appointment.
At the time of this appointment you may complete hospital paperwork for the surgery. Dr Malecky has several regular surgery sessions at Calvary John James Hospital and these dates are generally booked 1-2 months in advance as these positions fill up quickly.
Cancellations do happen. If you would like to be contacted on short notice should an earlier date become available for your child's surgery, you should let Reception know when the surgery is booked in.
